JUST THE FACTS

The things you need to know.

We are building our third commercial lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Gilbert, Arizona. When complete, our “Spoke” facility will be capable of processing up to 10,000 tonnes of end-of-life batteries and battery manufacturing scrap per year.

About the project.

The Arizona Spoke will support our two-step process, which produces critical materials like cobalt sulfate, lithium carbonate, and nickel sulfate from black mass.

Managing our environmental footprint.

Our proprietary technology has been developed to ensure minimal environmental impact with zero wastewater, no direct emissions, and no landfill.

Commitment to safety.

The safety of the public, our employees, and all stakeholders in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area are our top priorities. The Spoke facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art safety and security systems to ensure that everyone working at and around the facility is protected.

Working within the community.

At Li-Cycle, we believe that success is driven by communication and collaboration. We are committed to open and ongoing engagement with our neighbors and the community, ensuring that no question or concern goes unheard.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some common questions.

accent
Why is the project needed?

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly powering our world in automotive, industrial, utility, residential energy storage, and consumer electronics. Since 2010, the demand for lithium-ion batteries has grown by more than 500 percent. The world and environment needs our technology to recycle these batteries and ensure a sustainable future for our planet.

What is in a lithium-ion battery and where might I find it in my day-to-day life?

A lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that employs lithium ions for its power. Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere in your everyday life — cell phones, laptops, power tools, scooters, e-bikes, transit buses, passenger vehicles and many more common devices.

How will the Town of Gilbert and the Phoenix Metropolitan Area benefit from the project?

The project will create approximately 50 new permanent jobs, ranging from entry level to senior management, and will see us recruit from the local workforce, while also supporting hundreds of indirect jobs. Additionally, Li-Cycle’s technology ensures that thousands of tonnes of batteries are kept out of local landfills.

What will project operations look like?

While the Spoke facility will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, we do not anticipate substantial noise, odor, or light impacts. We will have controls in place to help mitigate these effects from our operations.
