Why is the project needed?
Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly powering our world in automotive, industrial, utility, residential energy storage, and consumer electronics. Since 2010, the demand for lithium-ion batteries has grown by more than 500%. The world and environment needs our technology to recycle these batteries and ensure a sustainable future for our planet.
What is in a lithium-ion battery and where might I find it in my day-to-day life?
A lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that employs lithium ions for its power. Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere in your everyday life — cell phones, laptops, power tools, scooters, e-bikes, transit buses, passenger vehicles, and many more common devices.
How will the Town of Gilbert and the Phoenix Metropolitan Area benefit from the project?
The project has created approximately 50 new permanent jobs, ranging from entry level to senior management, and will see us recruit from the local workforce, while also supporting hundreds of indirect jobs. Additionally, Li-Cycle’s technology ensures that thousands of tonnes of batteries are kept out of local landfills.
What will project operations look like?
While the Arizona Spoke facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, we do not anticipate substantial noise, odour, or light impacts. We currently have controls in place to help mitigate these effects from our operations.
