The things you need to know.

Our Kingston plant is a fully operational lithium-ion battery recycling facility located in Ontario. This facility (our “Kingston Spoke”) has a processing capacity of 5,000 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries and battery manufacturing scrap per year.

About the facility.

The Kingston Spoke supports our two-step process, which produces critical materials like cobalt sulfate, lithium carbonate, and nickel sulfate from black mass.

Managing our environmental footprint.

Our proprietary technology has been developed to ensure minimal environmental impact with zero wastewater, no direct emissions, and no landfill.

Commitment to safety.

The safety of the public, our employees, and all stakeholders in the Kingston area are our top priorities. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art safety and security systems to ensure that everyone working at and around the facility is protected.

Working within the community.

At Li-Cycle, we believe that success is driven by communication and collaboration. We are committed to open and ongoing engagement with our neighbours and the community, ensuring that no question or concern goes unheard.

Here are some common questions.

Why is the facility needed?

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly powering our world in automotive, industrial, utility, residential energy storage, and consumer electronics. Since 2010, the demand for lithium-ion batteries has grown by more than 500 percent. The world and our environment needs technology to recycle these batteries and ensure a sustainable future for our planet.

What is in a lithium-ion battery and where might I find it in my day-to-day life?

A lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that employs lithium ions for its power. Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere in your everyday life — cell phones, laptops, power tools, scooters, e-bikes, transit buses, passenger vehicles and many more common devices.

What do facility operations look like?

While the Kingston Spoke operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, there are no substantial noise, odour, or light impacts. We have controls in place to help mitigate these effects from our operations.
