Catching Up with Our Team in Magdeburg

Recently, I visited our Spoke facility in Magdeburg, Germany. It’s always energizing to connect with the talented people who make up our Spoke teams.

Our Germany Spoke began operations in August 2023. Like all our teams, the people in Magdeburg do an amazing job. This Spoke is a great example of some of the valuable differentiators of our recycling technology, like the ability to process larger pack batteries, that provide benefits for our customers and partners.

The European EV and recycling market is robust, and Li-Cycle is meeting customer needs. I’m proud to say that we have recycling contracts with four of the largest EV Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) on the continent and continue to broaden our commercial footprint in the EU.

We recently shared that we are partnering with two leading automotive OEMs with exclusive agreements to recycle lithium-ion battery materials. These agreements  deliver additional sources of feedstock for our Germany Spoke and demonstrate that we continue to be a preferred recycling partner for some of the biggest names in the automotive industry, including a high-performance, luxury OEM and a leading, premium OEM. We source feedstock from within Germany and also from EV production facilities within the EU.

Having the right team in place to support these contracts is critical to our long-term success and the group in Magdeburg continues to help us ensure that our customers’ needs are met while upholding our commitments to safety and sustainability.

Magdeburg is a close-knit community and many of the people who work at our Spoke also live in the Saxony-Anhalt area. At Li-Cycle, we pride ourselves on being good neighbors—we work to build relationships with those around us, provide quality jobs, contribute to the local economy, and ensure that the processes we follow at our Spokes are safe and environmentally sound. Our Magdeburg location was our first European Spoke, and it has set the bar high in a short space of time. I look forward to what this team will do next and the successes we will celebrate together.
