Health & Safety and Environmental Manager

Location: Mississauga, ON

Job Summary:

The HSE Manager will recommend strategic direction and implement plans based on safety audit results and will ensure that policies and programs meet legislated requirements. Responsibilities will include leading and training employees in safety management best practices, assisting with hazard identification and the development of safe work procedures, identifying, developing and delivering safety training and providing day-to-day guidance and advice. The HSE Manager will also be responsible for providing  support for the safety requirements of significant projects.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement HSE strategies and action plans to ensure safe practices and sustainable development.
  • Provide necessary training, leadership, organization and control to meet the company’s safety goals.
  • Take action to maintain overall safe practices and procedures, including the authority to cease an unsafe operating procedure.
  • Implement information flow and data publications to ensure each level of management is properly informed of all activities relative to compliance with company safety policies and bulletins.
  • Ensure all equipment and buildings owned or operated by the company comply with safety and fire regulations and any other Provincial or Federal regulations.
  • Conduct accident investigations as necessary to assist with liability determination and causation, including resolution of open claims.
  • File requests for accident evaluations, ensuring unpreventable accidents are recorded as such wherever applicable.
  • Coordinate procedures for pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewal energy.
  • Audit, analyze and report environmental performance.
  • Promote and raise awareness of the impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislated or best practices, on corporate, ethical and social responsibility.
  • Keep up to date with changes in environmental legislation and best practice initiatives.
  • Develop, monitor and manage HSE strategy budgets.
  • Report on HSE metrics to executive team
Job Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary degree in related field.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in Health & Safety management.
  • Experience in developing and implementing Health and Safety programs and monitoring performance.
  • Understand and have complete knowledge of all Federal, Provincial rules and regulations pertaining to safety codes and Occupational Health and Safety rules
  • Direct experience assessing training needs, creating training materials to fulfill those needs, and then delivering the training
  • Competency in reporting safety KPI’s.
  • Experience in investigating health and safety incidents; provide reporting and recommend/follow action(s) to completion.
  • Excellent time management and project management skills.
  • High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Effective leadership skills required.
